  • Faith doesn't require me to understand everything God is doing.  Faith rests on what God has already revealed about Himself.

How Do I Abide When My Heart Is Troubled?

  1. Bring your trouble to Jesus 
  2. Bring your mind back to what Jesus has said
  3. Trust what you know about Jesus when you cannot see what comes next
  4. Keep doing the things that keep you close to Jesus.

    Digging Deeper

    1. Read the conversation without the chapter break.
    Begin with John 13:33 and read through John 14:6. Remember that the chapter numbers were added later. Notice what Jesus has just told the disciples before He says, “Do not let your heart be troubled.” Pay particular attention to Peter's questions in 13:36–38 and Thomas' question in 14:5. How does the context change the way you hear Jesus' words in 14:1?

    2. Follow the word “believe.”
    Read John 14:1–11 again and notice how Jesus begins and ends this section. Verse 1 says, “believe also in Me,” and verse 11 says, “Believe Me…” Look at everything Jesus says between those two statements. What reasons does Jesus give His disciples for continuing to trust Him when they cannot understand what is happening?

    3. Notice what the disciples ask for—and what Jesus gives them.
    Thomas wants to know the way in verse 5. Philip wants Jesus to show them the Father in verse 8. Read Jesus' answers carefully. Thomas asks for a way, and Jesus says, “I am the way.” Philip asks to see the Father, and Jesus says, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” Consider what this teaches us about abiding: when the disciples are looking for answers beyond Jesus, Jesus repeatedly brings their attention back to Himself.
