What God builds in your life must be intentionally guarded, or it will slowly drift back into compromise.
Nehemiah 13:7-8 (NASB) 7 and I came to Jerusalem and learned about the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, by preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God. 8 It was very displeasing to me, so I threw all of Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.
What you tolerate today will take territory tomorrow.
Nehemiah 13:10 (NASB) 10 I also discovered that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers who performed the service had gone away, each to his own field.
When you neglect what matters spiritually, something else will take its place.
Nehemiah 13:17 (NASB) 17 Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath day?
If you don’t protect time for God, everything else will consume it.
Nehemiah 13:24 (NASB) 24 As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them was able to speak the language of Judah, but the language of his own people.
What you allow in your heart will eventually shape your home.
Takin’ It Home…
Digging Deeper- Returning to God (Nehemiah 13:9, 30–31)
One detail that is easy to miss in Nehemiah 13 is this: Nehemiah doesn’t just confront sin— he restores order. After removing Tobiah, the text says:
Nehemiah 13:9 “Then I gave an order and they cleansed the rooms; and I returned there the utensils of the house of God with the grain offerings and the frankincense.”
And later:
Nehemiah 13:30–31 “Thus I purified them from everything foreign and appointed duties for the priests and the Levites, each in his task, and I arranged for the supply of wood at appointed times and for the first fruits.”
Don’t miss this: He didn’t just remove what was wrong… He re-established what was right.
Why This Matters
Many people are willing to remove sin… But they don’t replace it with intentional obedience. So what happens? The same patterns return. Jesus warned about this:
Matthew 12:43–45 “Now when the unclean spirit goes out of a man… it finds the house unoccupied, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself… and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
An empty space… Becomes a vulnerable space.
Lasting change is not just removing what is wrong—it is restoring what is right.
Looking Ahead — Philippians Series
Next week, we begin a brand-new series in the book of Philippians.
And if Nehemiah has shown us how God rebuilds what is broken…
Philippians will show us how to live with joy and stability in every season.
Because here’s the reality: Life is not always easy. Circumstances are not always ideal. But joy in Christ is still possible.
Philippians 1:6 “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Nehemiah showed us God rebuilding our lives…
Philippians will show us how to live in what God is building.
